Graphic Design General Backgrounds and Vision
The graphic designer gives shape to visual communication. Every form of information-exchange involving text, symbols, and images can be included in their sphere of activity: printed media such as books, brochures, posters, and magazines; spatial objects that serve primarily to inform such as signposting or exhibition typography; and the various forms of interactive communication using computers: websites, CD-ROM’s, etcetera.
The designer must possess not only traditional skills, but also strategic insight. The designer’s abilities are increasingly drawn upon to help devise and determine better ways of ensuring that information reaches the intended target, and that it is then made to be accessible and persuasive.
The ‘editorial’ role of the designer is an important principle in graphic design. The emphasis of has been shifted from an aesthetic, to a communication-oriented approach to the profession. The designer should be to shoulder much of the responsibility for the entire creative process, and for all the strategic choices that need to be made concerning the creation of a product.
